Types of network

NB-IoT · LTE-M: the right network for each use

In short: the whole PRO range now runs on low-power cellular networks. NB-IoT is the foundation; LTE-M is added as a second network on the ULTRA L+ 1105, the COMPACT 1115 and the REACT 1215, for redundancy and mobility. All of them communicate two-way with the platform and update remotely (OTA / FOTA). No tracker in the range runs on a legacy cellular network any more.

📶

NB-IoT

A cellular network that is low-bandwidth and low-power (LPWAN), optimised for small messages sent in short bursts.

  • Several years of battery life
  • Very good indoor and basement penetration
  • European and North American bands
  • Higher latency, limited mobility
Base network · STANDARD plan
📡

LTE-M (Cat-M1)

LPWAN cellular with higher throughput, lower latency and better handling of mobility and roaming.

  • Complements NB-IoT (dual network)
  • Automatic switching for redundancy
  • Better suited to highly mobile assets
  • European and North American bands
EXTENDED plan · ULTRA L+ 1105 · COMPACT 1115 · REACT 1215
🛰️

GNSS · Wi-Fi · BLE

Not to be confused with the networks opposite: these locate, they do not carry data to the platform.

  • GNSS (GPS, GALILEO): outdoor positioning
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi scanning: indoor positioning
  • Wi-Fi upload: uploading in cellular dead zones
  • BLE 5.0: zone-level accuracy through beacons
Positioning · no data transport

Since August 2026, the PRO range is entirely NB-IoT / LTE-M. The REACT, the only hardwired vehicle tracker, previously ran on a legacy cellular network with a SIM card: the 1215 reference that replaces it has moved to dual-network NB-IoT + LTE-M, with the managed connectivity of the EXTENDED plan. There is therefore no SIM card and no data subscription to take out on any product.

Which tracker uses which network, and with which connectivity plan

In short: the ULTRA N+ (1101) and ULTRA N (1141) run on NB-IoT alone, on the STANDARD plan. The ULTRA L+ (1105), COMPACT (1115) and REACT (1215) add dual-network NB-IoT + LTE-M, with the EXTENDED plan included as standard. The REACT is still the only vehicle-powered tracker, but it no longer uses a legacy cellular network or a SIM card.

* Non-permanent roaming (≤ 90 days in any rolling 120 days), handled automatically by the tracker. The maps are indicative: real coverage can vary with the season, conditions and user density.

Validated coverage, not a simple roaming agreement. For a country to be listed as covered, three conditions are checked: real network coverage with support for low-power features, an operator contract with roaming agreements, and device certification for sale and operation in that country. That is why only validated countries are listed.

How the connectivity works

End-to-end managed connectivity, with no SIM card and no operator contract

In short: the cellular connectivity of the asset trackers (NB-IoT / LTE-M) is managed end to end. No SIM card to buy, no operator contract to negotiate: multi-operator roaming is included in the plan. Here are the key mechanisms.

🔄

Data recovery (patented)

If the network is momentarily unavailable, the tracker stores its positions and measurements in memory and sends them automatically as soon as the connection returns. No data is lost.

Included across the range
📶

Wi-Fi upload fallback

Where cellular does not reach, trackers fitted with Wi-Fi can upload their data over a known Wi-Fi network (the same SSID everywhere). Ideal in warehouses or dead zones.

ULTRA N+ · ULTRA L+ · COMPACT
↕️

Two-way communication

The tracker sends its data and receives commands : configuration changes and remote firmware updates (OTA / FOTA), with no physical intervention.

Low-power transceiver
📍

Network positioning (fallback)

As a last resort (no GPS, no Wi-Fi, no BLE), the position is estimated from the cellular tower in use. Accuracy of around 10 km : a rough approximation, so the asset is never completely lost.

Backup mechanism
🌍

Multi-operator roaming

In covered countries, the tracker connects to the best available operator. The EXTENDED plan adds redundancy (more roaming agreements per country) on top of LTE-M.

The 3 connectivity levels

Three managed cellular plans: STANDARD, EXTENDED, Extension Pack 1

In short: the TRAKmy PRO range rests on 3 levels of low-power cellular connectivity, all managed end to end: STANDARD, EXTENDED, then EXTENDED + Extension Pack 1. Each level adds countries to the previous one; coverage extends automatically as new countries are added, with no action from the customer.

* Non-permanent roaming (≤ 90 d / 120 d). In STANDARD countries, the four asset trackers work over NB-IoT; LTE-M (dual network) is activated from the EXTENDED plan. In EXTENDED / Pack 1 countries, coverage exists only through those plans, so only the ULTRA L+ 1105, the COMPACT 1115 and the REACT 1215 work there.

What is included, by network

The scope depends on the network used

In short: the low-power networks (NB-IoT, LTE-M) are managed end to end by our connectivity platform, across the whole range. Extension Pack 1 is the only paid option, and it is added on top of the EXTENDED plan.

Common to all networks, not included: the high-accuracy indoor positioning infrastructure (BLE Geobeacon and Quuppa beacons) is additional hardware. Real-time tracking is not guaranteed outside coverage: data is then delayed through data recovery.

Limits of use

Worth knowing to size a deployment properly

In short: six points determine how to size a fleet correctly: the nature of roaming in certain countries, the accuracy of network positioning, behaviour outside coverage, the choice between NB-IoT and LTE-M, the radio bands supported, and the REACT's power supply.

Non-permanent roaming

In some countries (Turkey, China, India), roaming is limited to 90 days in any rolling 120 days (handled automatically by the tracker). Not suitable for assets that stay permanently in those countries.

Accuracy of network positioning

Positioning from a cellular tower has an accuracy of around 10 km and can fail if the tower database is out of date. It is a fallback, not precise positioning (prefer GPS / Wi-Fi / BLE).

Outside coverage

With no cellular network and no known Wi-Fi, the tracker sends nothing in real time: positions are stored and resent when the connection returns (data recovery). No live tracking outside coverage.

NB-IoT versus LTE-M

NB-IoT has higher latency and handles fast movement poorly. For highly mobile assets or where redundancy matters, choose a dual-network model: ULTRA L+ 1105, COMPACT 1115 or REACT 1215.

European / North American bands

The NB-IoT / LTE-M radios are designed for European and North American bands. Outside those regions, check band compatibility even where a roaming agreement exists.

REACT 1215: power supply required

The REACT 1215 is designed to be powered by the vehicle (10 to 30 V DC), which allows a far higher reporting rate than battery models. With the power cut, it switches to its replaceable 12,000 mAh backup battery and reports an hourly position. Its coverage follows the EXTENDED plan, like the rest of the range.

LPWAN network comparison

NB-IoT · LTE-M · legacy cellular (2G / 4G) · Sigfox · LoRaWAN: which one for asset tracking?

In short: TRAKmy trackers send small volumes of data in short bursts. For that use, power consumption and reliability matter more than throughput. In practice, the best network is the one actually deployed in your region.

NB-IoT or LTE-M? NB-IoT offers slightly longer battery life when stationary; LTE-M offers more predictable performance in motion thanks to automatic handover. The ULTRA L+ 1105 carries both (dual network) to combine the best of the two. TRAKmy left Sigfox for NB-IoT to secure lasting coverage, remote updates and two-way connectivity.

Positioning technologies

GPS · Network · Wi-Fi · BLE: each technology has its strengths

In short: TRAKmy trackers combine several positioning technologies in a configurable sequence. The tracker tries the methods in order of priority until it obtains a position that is accurate enough, then moves to the next one if it fails.

Positioning workflow: the tracker tries BLE Geobeacon, then GPS, then Wi-Fi, then the cellular network, in that order. The next method is only tried if the previous one fails. If indoor detection is enabled and few GPS satellites are visible, the tracker switches to Wi-Fi without waiting for the maximum GPS timeout, which saves battery.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about connectivity
on the PRO trackers

Yes, across the whole PRO range: ULTRA N+ 1101, ULTRA N 1141, ULTRA L+ 1105, COMPACT 1115 and REACT 1215. Connectivity is managed end to end: no SIM card to buy, no operator contract, and multi-operator roaming is included in the plan. That has been true since August 2026 for the REACT too — the hardwired vehicle tracker, which previously ran on a legacy cellular network with a SIM card.
The STANDARD plan covers Europe and the United States over NB-IoT alone: it applies to the ULTRA N+ 1101 and the ULTRA N 1141. The EXTENDED plan adds the dual NB-IoT + LTE-M network (redundancy, better mobility) and new countries such as Poland, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan and South Africa. It is included as standard on the ULTRA L+ 1105, the COMPACT 1115 and the REACT 1215.
Yes for Guadeloupe (971), Martinique (972) and French Guiana (973), through Extension Pack 1 added on top of the EXTENDED plan. The compatible models are those with the EXTENDED plan: ULTRA L+ 1105, COMPACT 1115 and REACT 1215. Other overseas territories need to be checked case by case.
The tracker stores its positions and measurements in memory thanks to patented data recovery, then sends them automatically as soon as the connection returns. No data is lost, but there is no real-time tracking while the tracker stays outside cellular coverage and away from a known Wi-Fi network.
NB-IoT offers the best indoor penetration among cellular technologies. It works in most warehouses, basements and industrial buildings. Where cellular does not reach, trackers fitted with Wi-Fi can upload their data over a known Wi-Fi network. In heavily shielded environments (Faraday cages, deep cellars), BLE beacons complete the positioning.
Yes, since the 1215 reference. The REACT now runs on NB-IoT and LTE-M, with the EXTENDED plan included as standard: the same managed connectivity, the same covered countries and the same absence of a SIM card as the rest of the range. It remains the only vehicle-powered tracker (10 to 30 V DC), which allows a higher reporting rate, and it keeps a replaceable 12,000 mAh backup battery in case of a power cut. The previous generation ran on a legacy cellular network with a SIM card and a separate coverage model.
